As we age, our physical appearance evolves. Wrinkles begin to form, the pull of gravity manifests in certain parts of our body, and dark patches, known as age spots or liver spots, emerge on the skin. These spots can appear anywhere on the body, including the face, legs, arms, shoulders, and hands.
Age spots are a type of hyperpigmentation, a common condition where excess melanin – the natural pigment in the skin – leads to dark spots and an uneven skin tone. Although these spots are not harmful, it is advisable to consult a doctor if:
- Some spots darken more than others
- A dark circle forms around one or more spots
- They continue to grow or start to change to a reddish color
